On the nature of black hole entropy

Daniel Sudarsky

I will discuss the motivation and some of the questions that arise in attempting to associate an entropy to a black hole, and to do so in a way that “mimics“ the usual statistical mechanical accounts for the thermodynamic entropy of ordinary systems. I will briefly review some of the most popular lines of approach to the problem and discuss what I see as their general shortcomings.
